Given it will (with any luck) be worn for a lifetime, choosing the right engagement ring is important for any couple. To make sure you’re nailing the brief, going for a bespoke design can often be the answer, whether you’re looking for something classic and timeless, or packed with personality.
For something truly special, venture beyond big names like De Beers, Boodles and Bucherer and work with smaller independent London jewellers, ranging from those in London’s traditional jewellery epicentre, Hatton Garden, to more modern businesses or young designers, who can create something unique, unusual and worthy of a lifetime of wear.

Michelle Oh
London-based fine jewellery designer Michelle Oh creates pieces that blur the line between art and adornment. Her designs are distinctive and contemporary, a little bit abstract and raw while remaining polished and elegant. Everything is handcrafted in the UK and finished in Oh’s east London studio using ethical materials and unconventional gemstones such as salt-and-pepper and champagne diamonds, and antique cuts. She stocks a ready-to-ship collection of engagement rings, all of which can be reworked in custom materials for anyone not looking for something fully bespoke. Once the stone is sourced, your ring will be with you within seven weeks.

Lylie
British jeweller Eliza Walter founded her fine jewellery brand Lylie in 2017 with a clear mission: to create exquisite jewellery that’s free from mining. Walter sources materials through Lylie’s in-house gold exchange, which encourages customers to send their unwanted or broken gold and silver jewellery to the studio in exchange for brand credits. Thanks to the success of this program, nearly 100 per cent of the gold used in Lylie’s collections is from the exchange, and all diamonds and gemstones it uses are either lab-grown or recycled antique stones. Walter’s groundbreaking efforts to reduce the brand’s carbon footprint have earned her a special “Salvaged” brand mark from the Birmingham Assay Office (a consumer safeguarding trust for the jewellery industry), and in 2024 Lylie achieved B Corp certification. Keira Knightley, Rosamund Pike and Olivia Colman are all fans.

Fenton
Fenton was founded in 2018 with a focus on simplifying the ring design process for its customers and reducing costs by cutting out the middleman. The brand works directly with gem-sourcers and its own production team in India, cutting costs and avoiding the mark-ups often applied on gem dealership. It’s a brand for the Instagram generation with its affordably priced, playful designs with brightly coloured gemstones in modern settings. Fenton has a focus on ethical sourcing, supply chain transparency and recycled precious metals, and launched lab-grown diamonds in 2022. Any ring purchased from Fenton comes with a certificate telling you exactly where in the world your gemstone has come from, with a guarantee it’ll be from a conflict-free zone. Originally online-only, the brand now has a showroom on Mayfair’s Duke Street; bespoke pieces take six to 10 weeks, depending on the specific design.

Jessie Thomas
London-based goldsmith and fine jewellery designer Jessie Thomas learnt her craft from her father, the renowned master goldsmith David Thomas, who was a pioneer of the avant-garde gold jewellery movement that emerged in London during the 1960s. Jessie’s work is known for its distinctive simplicity, combining a modern, organic aesthetic with intricate craftsmanship. Each piece is handmade in her Bourne Street workshop using recycled 18k gold and responsibly sourced precious gemstones and diamonds. Her designs seamlessly fuse elements of her father’s early work with her own contemporary vision, and reflect a love of rugged, textured gold and stones like pearls and tourmalines, drawing further inspiration from the Etruscan and Hellenistic periods.
