A Sussex treehouse a short drive from Hastings and Rye, a bright and bold Zandra Rhodes exhibition in Bath, Cardiff's first Michelin-starred restaurant and more.

A treehouse in Sussex

If a spell closer to nature is feeling urgent, a break at Looking Glass Lodge might be the ticket. A five-minute drive from Pett Level’s windswept beach, this retreat for two (no pets or children allowed) is equipped with a log burner, underfloor heating and dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to quietly contemplate this pocket of outstanding natural beauty in luxe seclusion. The shops and restaurants of Hastings and Rye are just short drives away, too.

Cabin fever in Devon

East Devon’s much-loved guesthouse, smallholding and restaurant Glebe House has transformed its former granny-annexe-turned-artist’s-studio into two cedar-clad cabins. Each has an outdoor tub for starlit soaking, and access to a woodfired sauna with idyllic views over Coly Valley. Field-to-fork snacks can be ordered in if cooking feels too much like a chore – head chef David Knapman is Fat Duck-trained and makes the most of the produce harvested from Glebe House’s 15 bountiful acres.

Bath time for two icons

Bath’s Holburne Museum plays host to the works of two living legends this winter. First up, three decades’ worth of bright, bold garments by Zandra Rhodes (January 24–May 10, 2026), followed by a series of close studies of Roman sculptures – showing for the first time in the UK – by photographer Don McCullin (January 30–May 4). Afterwards, saunter across the Avon to the newly redeveloped Shires Yard where new tenants include Coret Coffee & Wine, British menswear purveyors Gieves & Hawkes and Bramley’s first standalone store.

A taste of Wales

If you’re passing through Cardiff, bookmark its first Michelin-starred restaurant, from chef Tom Waters (another Fat Duck alumnus). Gorse, in leafy Pontcanna, pays tribute to local fishermen, farmers and growers with Solva crab, Welsh truffle and Gower salt marsh mutton featuring on its expansive tasting menu (all served on some covetable stoneware by Welsh maker Cläi Ceramics).

Edinburgh’s must-stop shop

Weekend queues outside Darcie Maher’s Lannan Bakery are a regular sight in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. The cult baked-goods emporium has now expanded with Lannan Pantry next door, a one-stop-shop for homemade charcuterie, biodynamic wines, flavour-packed produce from Natoora and cultured butter from the Edinburgh Butter Co. The weekly pastry pre-orders are a precious time-saver on dreary winter days or a post-Hogmanay hangover.
