The Poland Street spot just off Oxford Street serves up sausages, house-made pies and plant-based options in a retro-style setting – and it’s been named one of the best fish’n’chip spots in the UK.

Who said that the best fish’n’chips has to be enjoyed beside the seaside? Golden Union Fish & Chips, a Soho fish bar serving Londoners since 2008, has been named one of the 10 best in the UK as part of 2027 National Fish & Chip Awards, run by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF).

Founded by Billy Drew and Kerry Brennan 18 years ago, the Poland Street spot just off Oxford Street offers up the classic combo as well as sausages, house-made pies and a variety of veggie and plant based options in a neon-lit, retro-style setting.

To eat in, a small battered cod and chips comes in at £19.95, chicken and mushroom pie and chips is £16.50, a jumbo sausage and chips is £10.50, and plant-based battered “fish” and chips is £14.95. If you’re taking away, a regular cod and chips will cost you £14.95.

This is Golden Union’s second consecutive year in the top 10 shortlist. Poppies nearby was shortlisted for the award in 2013 before winning the best independent fish’n’chip shop in the UK award in 2014.

“I’m really proud to share that Golden Union has been shortlisted” said co-founder Drew in a statement. “To be recognised alongside some of the best fish’n’chip restaurants in the country means a great deal to us.”

Other chippies in the top 10 include No1 Cromer in Norfolk, The Cod’s Scallops in Nottingham and Ocean Fish Platter in Ipswich. The winner of the Fish and Chip Restaurants of the Year 2027 will be announced on February 24, 2027.

Golden Union Fish & Chips is at 38 Poland St, W1F 7LY.
