As she prepares to host the Bafta Film Awards red carpet, the London-born presenter shares her favourite cinemas, her go-to spot for embracing main character energy, and the red velvet cake that has her “in a chokehold”.

“I like to chat and share culture,” says Clara Amfo, when asked how she’d describe herself. It’s a modest answer for someone at the top of their game in the world of radio and TV broadcasting. The award-winning Londoner, who was born in Kingston upon Thames, reached household name status as the former host of BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge and Future Sounds, and is now a core presenter of The One Show. She’s interviewed the likes of Elton John, Olivia Dean and Kendrick Lamar– and recently hosted the Bafta Film Awards red carpet.

“I spend my days in London working and chasing joy at the cinema, theatre, gigs, club and shops,” she says. “Just when you think you’ve seen it all, something new will pop up and surprise you. I love nothing more than knowing the world’s cuisine is on your doorstep if you feel like it – all the different cultures are what make the city great.”

Broadsheet spoke to Amfo to find out which London spots make her happiest. With her recent Baftas hosting role, cinema was first on the agenda.

Hi Clara. What’s your favourite cinema in London?
I do love an Everyman – the Broadgate and Belsize Park are my faves. I love the announcement staff do before every film. I always make sure to give them encouraging applause because it’s quite nerve-wracking!

Which cinema does the best snacks?
I’m a sucker for a jumbo sweet and salty box of popcorn at an Odeon.

Do you have a favourite spot in London that was featured in a film?
Walking over Westminster Bridge. It’s always fun to pretend to be Cillian Murphy [in 28 Days Later].

Where do you go in London when you want to feel like you’re in a movie?
A walk along Southbank after 7pm when all the lights come on, especially when I’m by myself: peak main character settings.

What’s the essential play, TV show, song, book or film about London?
I will always have a soft spot for Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. I’ve told her this a few times, she’s always so warm and polite, I’m sure she’s bored of me now!

What’s your favourite London restaurant?
I am partial to Rita’s [in Soho]. I like the intimate but friendly feel, and its new burger is delicious.

What’s a recent cultural outing that you’ve particularly loved in London?
Jamie Lloyd’s production of Evita was sensational. Rachel Zegler is that girl!

If you want to impress someone, where would you take them?
The Royal Academy. It’s a beautiful space and is always filled with great conversation-starters.

Where do you go for coffee or tea?
Suba bakery: lovely pastries washed down with deliciously roasted coffee.

What are your favourite shops around London? Any good finds recently?
My current favourite shops for clothes in London are End and Nordic Poetry. I also love Sounds of the Universe record shop. I’m trying to limit my visits to Hummingbird Bakery; the red velvet cake has me in a chokehold.

Where do you head when you need a break from London?
Amsterdam and Paris. I love a walkable city!
