The Finsbury Park site will use its restaurant kitchen to expand its bakery output, to “increase the volume without compromising on the quality of our production”.

From next week, Jolene Hornsey Road – affectionally called Big Jo – will stop serving dinner. The Jolene team plans to convert the restaurant kitchen into a larger bakery to increase production of its breads and baked treats – which will be stocked at a new site opening next year.

While founders Jeremie Cometto-Lingenheim and David Gingell don’t want to reveal the new site’s location yet, as they’re in the “final steps of the lease assignment”, they confirm that they’ll be making the announcement early next year.

“The new site will mirror the offering our Shoreditch bakery with sweet and savoury baked goods, sandwiches, bread, coffees and teas as well as kombucha and sodas from our Hackney fermentary,” Cometto-Lingenheim and Gingell tell Broadsheet. “Our development plans for the Hornsey space will enable us to increase the volume without compromising on the quality of our production.”

Jolene Hornsey Road opened in September 2020. Its nickname Big Jo nods to its role as the central bakery for Jolene’s four sites, turning out the group’s much-loved treats and breads, which are made using Wildfarmed grains and responsibly sourced ingredients.

Cometto-Lingenheim and Gingell says that Jolene bakery in Hornsey Road will remain open during the day, seven days a week. “The plan for Hornsey was always to prioritise the space for our bakery operation and we do not envisage [re-introducing] a restaurant at that location in the future.”

Londoners can still enjoy Jolene’s ever-changing seasonal menu for dinner at the group’s original Newington Green site, as well as restaurants Primeur and Westerns Laundry.

“We have a few other restaurant projects we are exploring at present and announcements will be made in due course,” Cometto-Lingenheim and Gingell say. “For now our focus is on making Primeur, Westerns Laundry and Jolene the best eating spots they can be.”

The final dinner service at Jolene Hornsey Road will be this Saturday, November 29.
