Studio Anatomy: Cult Reformer Pilates Studio Opens a Second Branch, in Islington

In a soothing space that feels more like a fashion boutique than a workout studio, it’s offering hot mat classes and infrared saunas.

Countless reformer Pilates studios have cropped up around London in recent years. Standing out from the crowd is no mean feat – but London Fields’ Studio Anatomy has managed it. The proof? It’s just opened a second branch, in Islington.

When founder Lotti Benardout came across the airy spot – neighbouring Jolene bakery and Cass Art on Colebrooke Row, off Essex Road – she knew she’d struck gold. “There’s no traffic noise, no rush, just this space that feels like an escape,” she tells Broadsheet. “Islington felt like a natural next home for us. It’s a vibrant neighbourhood, which perfectly reflects what Studio Anatomy is all about.”

With their pared-back interiors and soft lighting, both studios look and feel more like fashion boutiques or the lobbies of design hotels than soulless fitness spaces. The new studio is all curved lines, poured concrete floors, accent chairs and oak carpentry.

“People are looking for more than just a workout,” says Benardout. “They want spaces that offer something deeper and more considered. It’s not just about burning calories anymore. People want somewhere that feels grounded, restorative and empowering. I want people to walk in and exhale, like they’ve entered a space that’s entirely theirs for 50 minutes.”

Benardout has previously cited US fashion label The Row as an inspiration for her studios, though in Islington she hopes the design echoes Australia’s fitness scene. “I’ve spent a lot [of time] out there and was inspired by some truly beautiful landscapes and spaces.”

The new studio expands on the facilities of the original. As well as the reformer and functional fitness classes that are on the schedule at London Fields, the Islington branch offers a hot mat room, with classes held under infrared heat, which is said to improve circulation and mobility, and to prompt quicker recovery. The new venue also has infrared saunas.

The Hackney studio has become known for its collaborations – including a recent pottery workshop and Pilates session with designer Henry Holland. Islington will follow suit. “We’re already exploring new ideas with local artists and neighbours in N1,” says Benardout. “Collaborations are a big part of our vision.”
