In what is likely to be the year’s most sought-after ticket, Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey will star in a new production of Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed musical, Sunday in the Park with George, in summer 2027.
Yesterday, the duo shared a photo on Instagram showing the two of them sitting in an art gallery, facing the painting that inspired the musical, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by French post-Impressionist painter Georges Seurat. Shortly after, news of the production at The Barbican was announced.
Sunday in the Park with George – with music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by his long-time writing partner James Lapine – tells the story of two artists, one loosely based on the life of Seurat and the other his muse, Dot. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1985.
This is the musical’s first major revival in London since 2005. It will be Ariana Grande’s London stage debut, whereas Bailey starred most recently in Shakespeare’s Richard II at the Bridge Theatre. Sunday in the Park with George will be directed by Marianne Elliott, who directed Bailey in the acclaimed 2018 West End production of Sondheim’s Company, which earned him an Olivier award for best actor in a supporting role in a musical.
Tom Scutt will design the production, having most recently worked on the Bridge Theatre’s revival of Sondheim’s Into the Woods.
Tickets for Sunday in the Park with George will go on sale in spring 2026. Join the mailing list for updates.
