Easter marks a season of regeneration and fresh new life: sunshine-yellow daffodils, fluffy chirping chicks – but most importantly, brand new varieties of chocolate eggs to try. The UK’s best chocolate-makers have released decadent takes on the classic treat; here’s a selection of our favourites.
Cakes & Bubbles
Cracking into Albert Adrià’s Easter egg could yield some guilt: it’s a stately milk chocolate ovoid made with Valrhona Satilia 38 per cent cocoa that’s studded with colourful white-chocolate flowers. Once you’ve had a good look and broken it apart, you’ll find a hazelnut praline filling that’s at once smooth and crunchy.

Il Gattopardo
Bring a playful Italian edge to your Easter with the signature leopard print egg by Il Gattopardo, the Mayfair restaurant inspired by 1960s Italy. This year, it has given its egg a cyan blue shell, which crunches pleasingly before giving way to creamy chocolate with pearls of caramel chocolate hidden inside.

Maison Francois
Surprise! There’s a pig’s face smiling out of your egg, a nod to Maison Francois’s mascot. Don’t let his cute little snout put you off; break open the ouef – made with 62 per cent dark Satilia and 33 per cent Tanariva milk chocolate – and you’ll be rewarded with 10 hazelnut praline truffles.

Pump Street
Love milk chocolate, but find the sweetness a bit cloying after a while? Pump Street has the answer. The family-run Suffolk chocolate-maker has added a new egg to its much-loved Easter collection. Its Madagascar Milk 58 per cent tempers the sweetness of the whole milk chocolate with darker notes of treacle, making it perfect for milk chocolate fans looking for an extra hit of complexity.

CassPea
These shiny, colourful eggs by south London chocolatier aren’t for those who like a simple square of dark chocolate as a treat – they’re heavy duty in the best possible way. They’re available in 350 grams or 1.2 kilograms, and their luminous milk chocolate exteriors are corrugated inside with marshmallow and salted caramel.

Prestat
Prestat knows its way around an Easter chocolate: it’s been tempering and conching in London since 1902. It’s doing a few eggs this year, but our pick is the Pink Marc de Champagne number. The egg itself is simple milk chocolate made with single-origin cocoa. But within is a cluster of the chocolatier’s Pink Marc de Champagne truffles – a white chocolate shell wrapped around a chocolate ganache infused with marc de champagne.

William Curley
A welcome surprise is in store with William Curley’s extra thick Easter egg, luxurious with its thicker shell, and then filled with Curley’s signature fresh “couture” chocolates. Numerous flavours of Curley’s award-winning eggs are available; our pick is the dark chocolate egg filled with luxurious salted maple caramel chocolates. Crack into it and it’ll soon become clear why William Curley has picked up numerous prestigious awards since opening his London-based business more than 20 years ago.
