Plus, where the Parakeet chef would take a date, his special-occasion picks and the place he goes to satisfy his sweet tooth.

Ben Allen has been around. He’s cooked at hotel fine diners, steeped himself in Austrian traditions at the Michelin-starred Steirereck in Vienna, and embraced open-fire cooking at Brat.

All this experience has fed into Allen’s menus at The Parakeet in Kentish Town, where he’s helmed the kitchen since it opened in 2023. There, he fuses his fine-dining background with a love of communal dining – aided by a dramatic dining room heavy on stained glass and wood. Produce is the guiding force behind his menus. Lately, that means delicate tartlets of clam and peas, fresh salads of multiple courgette varieties, generous slabs of ex-dairy sirloin grilled over flames, and the pub’s signature dessert: a 70 per cent dark chocolate mousse served at the table from a big bowl.

Allen’s cooking is rooted in family, and the array of cultures he was steeped in growing up in Highbury. “London’s food scene is always buzzing,” he tells Broadsheet. “Its incredible cultural diversity means there are countless culinary options to explore. From a Turkish in Green Lanes to [traditional] dishes in Chinatown, the variety is truly inspiring.”

The chef knows London dining – so we asked him his top picks for eating around town, whether it’s his go-to coffee spot or the table he books for a special occasion.

If you’re not eating at The Parakeet, where are you heading for a pub meal?
There are so many fantastic gastro pubs to choose from. The Plimsoll has a welcoming atmosphere and serves a great burger, The Hero offers traditional English pub grub, and The Waterman’s Arms features delightful seasonal dishes.

What’s your go-to for a quick takeaway dinner?
Quick dining isn’t usually my style, but if I need something on the go I’ll head to Nem Nem Vietnamese on Upper Street.

Where’s good for lunch on the go?
Healthy Wealthy is definitely the spot. They serve an incredible vegan Indian meal, and it’s located not too far from The Parakeet.

What’s your favourite coffee spot?
I really enjoy the coffee at The Good Mews.

It’s date night. Where are you going?
On my last date, I took her to Rambutan. We sat at the counter seats, which I prefer as it is always a good conversation starter.

What’s your special-occasion pick?
I’d recommend Ikoyi or Bouchon Racine. Both offer spectacular food and have outstanding service.

If you have friends visiting from out of town, where are you taking them?
St John is a must-visit. It’s a classic that every food lover should experience while in London, and it has paved the way for many exceptional restaurants.

Sometimes all you want is a drink and a good snack. Any recs?
I’d visit Mountain for a casual drink and some delightful starters; they have a fantastic selection of snacks.

Where do you buy your groceries?
Monte’s, just off Upper Street, is my go-to deli. The quality of ingredients you use can truly elevate a meal, and Monte’s always has exceptional produce.

What’s your favourite sweet treat in London?
I have a huge sweet tooth, and one of my favourite spots for ice-cream is Romeo & Giulietta Artisan Gelateria. It’s a must-try.

What’s your bucket list restaurant?
I dream of visiting Central in Peru. The menu looks fascinating, and I’m sure it’s filled with unique flavours that would be exciting for me as a chef. Exploring new tastes is always inspiring.
